This project investigated interior spaces that are created in unusual methods. I chose to combine an origami inspired folded paper artifact which snuggly nestled into a piece of poplar wood that I had machined with various tools.
3D / A Spacial Investigation
Interestingly this project began with the meditative process of origami paper folding. Through a variety of explorations I created this shape and found it to be an intriguing concept. I decided to further investigate the sensation of interior space that is created by this paper artifact.
The next step was creating a piece of poplar wood that uniquely paired with my folded paper artifact. I had a lot of fun utilizing the superb tools such as the table saw along with a wide array of chisels and hand tools. This was one of my first experiences in the CCA tool shop and working extensively with hand tools / chisels. I was hooked!
Sketches
Understanding the form through sketching was a key step of development in the design process. Laying out orthographic views and introducing architectural human figures into my ‘interior space’ brought life into my project.
Models
To continue my investigation I decided to incorporate some additional 3D elements into my design. I experimented by creating wooden chunks that perfectly rest between the paper artifact and the poplar board. I then used a long section of basswood and cut it down into small 1 inch sticks. These were used to create a surrounding structure, not as fluid with the design language but a fun exploration nevertheless.
