Brief: Multi-Use Stool for the Home
The stool is an under-appreciated item in the home, serving a mostly singular use. Meaning it is not the most frequently utilized piece of furniture and that is something I wanted to change. The decision to incorporate a ‘step ladder’ creates a multi functional piece of furniture that can be used for brief sitting or as an extra step for those hard to reach areas around the home.
Sketches
I began by producing many different thumbnail ideations and then narrowed my focus from that point. I was able to figure out the key aspects of my design through sketching and make decisions about the direction that I wanted to explore.
Refining
Through the process of sketching and iterating I chose a few designs that I found intriguing and decided to move forward with.
Models
After gathering my ideas and creating a plan, I proceeded to construct a few prototypes. My method of thinking is best informed by creating 3D models, I like to feel the curves and understand how light interacts with the surfaces.
Full Scale Model
In order to have a more developed understanding of scale I created a 1:1 scale model. I wanted to see how the form would look and if it needed modification. This model was an excellent resource for moving forward with my design, informing me of the potential pain points and opportunities.
